We report on page 1 today that Issac Construction will go into mediation with the city council over the decision not to allow quarries to dig deeper. It’s an issue Western News has been following closely for some months. That mediation will determine if Issac and Selwyn Quarries go through with an appeal to the Environment Court, which is a very costly exercise. As we report those who opposed the quarrying will be watching the mediation very closely. They will not want the city council to moderate its stance. Cricket ground under threat By Georgia O’Connor-Harding THE NEW Hornby Library, Service Centre and South West Pool could be sited along the fenceline near McDonald’s if city council staff decides to place it at Denton Park . The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board and affected sports users at Denton Park have been updated on progress council staff have made on the Hornby megafacility. Hornby Cricket Club president Kevin Hornbrook said it was pleased council staff had finally met with the clubs. But he said the location option city council staff showed the cricket club would mean it would lose its senior cricket ground. “The line they would like to put it down is the fence line of McDonald’s through to the rugby club. It comes out pass the toilets and goes down towards Denton Oval,” he said. Mr Hornbrook said the club would be happy to relocate as long as the city council found them a new facility in the Hornby area. Canterbury Track Cycling

In Brief COMMUNITY BOARD MEETING The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board will decide today whether to approve a plan to remove two trees at Lomax Reserve in Hornby. The city council was approached by residents around the reserve with concerns about trees shading their properties and leaf debris. Western News reported in October that residents had been lobbying the city council to remove the oak trees since late last year. The plan involves removing a red oak and english oak, and replanting three replacement trees. The community board will also consider the placement of electrical, water supply and wastewater infrastructure in parts of Paeroa Reserve today. The proposed work would be part of the Waste Water Riccarton Main Trunk Project, which aims to address problems with wastewater overflows and surcharging. QUARRYMAN’S TRAIL The Extraordinary Major Cycleway Routes Committee will meet tomorrow to decide the future of the Quarryman’s Trail cycleway. The city council expects 5000 people to use the cycleway daily. It will run from Halswell through to Moorhouse Ave and the city council has budgeted $15.5 million to build the route. The meeting will be held at the council chambers, 53 Hereford St, at 12.30pm tomorrow.

News Students fight injustice By Georgia O’Connor-Harding HORNBY HIGH School students have been taking action to address social issues across the city. Poverty, homelessness, sexuality, gender and the issue of refugees were all studied by about 90 year 10 students over the last month. As part of the Project Based Learning project students were required to work out what organisations were already doing for their chosen issue and what they could do to help. This included one group of students investigating homelessness and collecting two large boxes of food to send to the Christchurch City Mission and the Salvation Army. Year 10 student Cory Shadbolt said it shocked the students how many homeless people there were, particularly in the city centre. He said the city mission will have thousands of people turn up for the lunch it will run on Christmas Day. Donations of canned food were made by Countdown Hornby and New World Wigram to help the students with the project.

Head of English and media studies Scott Aitken said the driving question for the students was how they could improve the lives of others. “The students love it because it is actually addressing authentic, real-world issues compared to perhaps being told stuff by the

teachers,” Mr Aitken said. Five teachers were involved in organising the project. Some students gathered donations to send to residents in earthquake-damaged Kaikoura, while others baked cupcakes to raise money for the Rainbow Youth Foundation.

Domain trees face axe

By Georgia O’Connor-Harding ‘SCRUFFY TREES’ are likely to be removed at Halswell Domain to make way for a new car park. The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board will look at approving a new car park plan expecting to open up 69 spaces for users of the park. It comes with the extensions north and south of the original domain as part of its long-term development. The extensions of land 6ha north and 5ha south of the original domain over the past 15 years resulted in the need for additional car parking to accommodate the usage of the sports clubs. The proposed site will be located near the domain’s public toilets off Halswell Rd. Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton community board member Ross McFarlane said it is a “win-win” for everyone giving the “disorganised” area better structure. He described the current poplar trees as “scruffy old horrible things.” In spite of a city council report saying there could be some dissatisfaction with the removal of the trees, the eight submissions it received on the matter were sup-

Riccarton’s road cone record IT HAS been revealed Riccarton had the most cones in the city. Thousands of stray road cones were stacked up in the Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team yard, as a result of its campaign to tidy up the streets. The SCIRT CONEMOBILE collected more than 4000 cones from across the city. The largest number of cones retrieved, about 500, came from the Riccarton area. Other suburbs averaged 50-100 cones each. SCIRT recently put out a call for the public to send in their tipoffs of cones gone astray or left behind during the rebuild. Executive general manager Ian Campbell said the purpose of the cone recall was to leave the streets of the city clean and tidy. “SCIRT has used about 100,000 road cones over the last five-anda-half-years, but they haven’t always made it back to the yard when a site was packed up,” he said. Some of the recovered road cones will be put straight back to work, while others were sent to Kaikoura.

Million dollar mission to save a Mike Vincent is Kaikoura’s paua saviour. He reckons he and about 450 volunteers have saved paua worth more than $1 million since the November 14 earthquake. Fraser Walker-Pearce talks to the 44-year-old about questioning his science teacher and missing his wife and kids

Where are you while we’re chatting? We’re in Boat Harbour in the south of Kaikoura still, we’re waiting for a road to open so we can get access to some bays further to the north, the different inlets and bays up there. All the way from Oaro through to Peketa is the area we’ve been allowed to relocate paua. Talk to me about the process of relocating paua. What does that entail? Before I do I’ll explain how to normally gather paua. You jump in at low tide and dive for it; that’s the way to get it legally. But now because of the earthquake you can walk out in sand shoes without getting wet and reach it. In my whole 30 years of diving I’ve never been able to go into a tidal zone and pick up my six paua without getting wet. There’s no science in that, it’s just what’s happened.

So now you’re wading out, gathering them and dropping them deeper? What we do is we go out at low tide, when there’s a two hour window either side of that and we fill buckets with water and the harvesters go out and grab them, and the relocaters who are the experienced divers, go and place them on rocks, back into the water basically. The simple way of saying it is that we’re moving them from where there was no water, to where there is water. How much depth do you think has been lost from the earthquake? It’s hard to put a number on it, because all I can say is there’s hundreds of dead paua on the beaches now. It’s also important to ask if in the old tidal zone pre-earthquake was there any sea-life on the beach? The answer is no. In the new tidal zone after the quake would there be any life

there? And the answer is still no, because sea creatures can’t live out of water (laughs). And so you’ve brought it on yourself to get them back in the water? A diving mate of mine Dylan Dhue, his wife Hannah and I phoned each other the day after the earthquake. When we saw a photo of a rock full of paua well above the water line on Facebook, that’s what made me call

him and I said to him we have to do something. And that’s when I posted my first Facebook plea for help. And it all went from there? Pretty much. So now it’s all volunteers up here who all feel the same as us – they’ve all visited or dived here. It’s touched all of us. Kaikoura has a special place in all South Islanders’ minds and hearts. Also a big thank you to the local runanga in

Kaikoura who offered their help and support for us. Obviously you can’t save every single paua out there – but how many do you think you’ve relocated back to the water? You’re right we can’t save all of them. But I’d say we’ve put between 20,000 and 75,000kg of paua back into the water. But to give you an idea, we would fill a 20-30L bucket in about a minute, so we fill thousands of buckets. To put a money figure on what we’re doing, it’s about $90 for a ton of paua, so we would be talking over a million bucks for this operation normally. We’ve probably had about 450 volunteers over the whole time helping out too. I want to say a big thank you to all our wives out there as well (laughs). We’ve all got families mate, they’ve been our rocks, so letting us go away and do this is awesome. We’re coming up to Christmas now, how much longer do you think you can do this for? We’re waiting for a road to open up towards Peketa so we can get there. If it doesn’t open by Sunday though we’ll have to call it.

Kaikoura natural treasure When will you be back in Christchurch? I would say within the next week and a half. It’s been adventurous, but we just want to get home to support our families. It will be really awesome for me to see my wife Debra and my two young boys Kaydence and Ezekiel again. What suburb in Christchurch are you going back to? Addington. We’ve been there for eight years now. It’s our first house. I haven’t been working so my wife’s a bit stretched. I’m in the building industry but I’ve taken almost a year off to help with the house. Do you ask a few of your builder friends to help with the house? Oh hell yes. I’ve got heaps of friends that have helped out with the house, people like plasterers, painters, landscapers, it’s all good karma that comes around for them too. You must have a lot of good karma with the work you’re doing at the moment? Yes, I think I must have a bit of credit in the bank (laughs). It’s the love and support of the New Zealand people, that’s what allows me to keep going. We’re a special breed us Kiwis I truly be-

lieve that. I think when you have a natural disaster it brings people back together and you get a lot of good things happening. And in 20 years time our kids will be able to come out to Kaikoura and get paua. So it’s also about the future generation for you? It’s all about my kids and their kids, to get paua for me, their father, when I’m too old to get it myself (laughs). It’s me teaching them what’s important, conservation and all that. What high school did you go to in Christchurch? I went to Aranui High School. I was brought up and lived in New Brighton and loved surfing

on North Beach, I used to love to surf. I’m more into my diving and hunting now. I’d rather run around the hills and do stuff like that now, chasing pigs and deer. Who did you hang out with at school? It was a big community back then. It’s a lot different now because of the advances with technology nowadays. We’d phone people and actually bike to each others’ houses and that kind of thing. It was a small community and everybody knew everybody. Are there any schoolmates you still catch up with? I still see a lot of the mates, and because of this work I’m doing

up here a lot have come back out of the woodwork. That core group of good friends are still around. Just a big web of friends I guess. Did you have any favourite subjects at school? I loved science – I was the guy that would stand up in class and got in trouble for it, and ask about evolution and ask the teacher why apes aren’t turning into humans now, that kind of thing. I loved it because I liked the challenge of working through something and asking what’s going on here. Were you pretty smart for a student? I was an average student, sort of in-between average and above

average in terms of my brains. I loved my sport though. I played representative rugby for Canterbury, then I went and played league and then got into diving at 14 and hunting after that. I still play presidents rugby league for the Kaiapoi Bulldogs. I still throw myself around like I’m 21 to be honest (laughs). Did you do any tertiary education after Aranui? I did a course at polytech for business management. I think I got through one year and it got boring for me. It wasn’t challenging enough for me and I thought do I really need a piece of paper for this? I’m just a worker that learns a lot by talking to people and not judging them.

‘Kitten season’ comes early SPCA chief executive Barry Helem writes about making sure pets in Canterbury are cared for over the holiday season While most people are beginning to wind down for the holiday season, here at SPCA Canterbury we’re experiencing one of our busiest periods. The ‘kitten season’ has arrived early this year, with more than 200 kittens already coming through the SPCA’s animal centre and hundreds more expected over the next few months. We require large amounts of donated blankets and wet kitten food to help with the influx during this time. As the holiday season begins, I’d like to remind everyone that pets are a long-term commitment and not suitable as Christmas presents without the full involvement of household members in the decision. Adopting a pet should be a considered and educated choice, taking into account lifestyle, family and work commitments, and the financial ability to meet all the needs of a pet, including costs like dog registration, food, vet

bills and pet insurance. The weather is getting warmer which means it’s time to make sure your animals always have access to fresh drinking water and adequate shelter for protection from the sun. Try to exercise your dogs in the cooler times of the day (early morning or evening) to avoid burning their paws on hot pave-

Readers respond to Western News’ article on the Ministry of Education ruling out the establishment of a high school in the HalswellWigram area Gary Knight – As the gateway to Banks Peninsula and beyond, the established suburb of Halswell has through a mix of urban/rural lifestyles plus botanical beauty within parks and reserves created an idyllic situation for a diverse range of residents. Within this context, an appropriate and adequate academic protocol is essential. Secondary schools neighbouring Halswell ranging from years 7 to 13 and 9 to 13 status consist of Cashmere High, Hillmorton High, Hornby High, Christchurch Girls’ High and Riccarton High. Would deem an additional secondary school in Halswell a retrograde step. In complete contrast, however, is the minimal amount of primary schools in the Halswell precinct. In close proximity are Oaklands School and Halswell School with the addition of West Spreydon, Addington School and Hoon Hay School making the proposed purpose built primary school for Halswell a vital, overdue and positive step. This is a pro-active decision to cater for the rapid population growth of this suburb projected

to rise to between 34,000 and 40,000 by 2035. A reader responds to Western News’ article on The Greater Christchurch Public Transport Committee approving an extension of the Orange Line bus service through Murphys Rd Roger Hales – We live in Patterson Tce and both ourselves and a number of our neighbours are continually appalled at the speed and number of buses down what used to be a quiet street. We regularly witness two and often three buses within a minute or two of each other several times during the day. If cars are parked on the street it is not wide enough for two buses to pass – an indication to us that the road was not designed to accommodate bus traffic. The other matter we notice is that 95 per cent of the time all the buses are empty of passengers. Since the earthquakes we also notice that passing buses cause rattles and some vibration. I’m not sure our city fathers (or mothers) will listen and I understand the need for public transport but surely the routes should be confined to streets that can handle the traffic. I don’t expect anything to change but feel a little better having vented over the matter.

News Xmas light show with Kiwi flavour By Tom Doudney A POPULAR annual Christmas light show has opened with a distinctly Kiwi flavour to it this year. The Show at Carl and Maureen Seaward’s property at Shands Rd, Prebbleton, opened on Friday with thousands of individual lights involved. This year’s light show will have all New Zealand music, with a mix of established New Zealand bands such as Zed and more recent up and coming bands also contributing songs. Mr Seaward said they thought using New Zealand music would help give local bands exposure with people from around the country and overseas coming to the show. “A lot of people love it that we don’t do Christmas carols, believe it or not,” Mr Seaward said. “They say ‘we are over Christmas carols, it’s fantastic that we can come out here, enjoy this experience and not be bombarded with Christmas carols’.” Christchurch band Skelter had its song Suffocate featured as part of the light show and even shot a music video at the Seaward’s property during a test run for the displays.

CHRISTMAS WONDERLAND: Carl and Maureen Seaward’s popular light show at their Shands Rd property will be running throughout December. Band member Robert Daglish said they would probably release the video on social media. Having their music played at the show was an incredible opportunity for the band which was working on its debut EP. “Apparently [the song] is going to play seven or eight times each night and they are expecting that there are going to be at least 1000 people going a night so everyone

is going to hear our song and hopefully we will get more fans from that,” he said. Mr Seaward said other new aspects to this year’s show include a witches display and having a wide variety of animals featured in the displays. These included real creatures and mythological ones like dragons. The Seawards started putting up Christmas lights on their

property in 2008 and turned it into a synchronised light show with music in 2011. Last year’s show had more than 35,000 visitors. Mr Seaward said the event had grown each year to the point where he had lost track of how many lights were used in it. Last year someone from Rolleston rang the police to report seeing UFOs flying over-

heard when they saw the search lights pointed at the sky coming from the Seaward’s property. This year’s entry fee is $5 per person, with the money going towards funding the show and Mrs Seaward’s medical treatment for her Lyme disease. The show, at 650 Shands Rd, will be open every night until December 30, 8.30pmmidnight.

Rushed marriage lasts the distance

FUNDRAISING IS under way to help send Hoon Hay gymnast Stella Ashcroft to her next international competition. The 14-year-old, who is one of the country’s most promising gymnasts, needs to raise $3962 to get to the World Olympic Gymnastics Academy Classic competition, followed by the Houston National Invitational competition. Stella is with the Christchurch School of Gymnastics and will be joined by 11 others from the school for the competitions. They are in the middle of fundraising for the trip and aim to get $10,000 before they leave for the competition. They have been selling fudge, pasta, sausage sizzles and selling items on Trade Me to meet their goal. Currently they have raised $7300. The gymnasts will head to Texas, United States, for the competitions, which take place from February 17 to 26. Stella trains for 30 hours a week while balancing her studies at Christchurch Girls’ High School. She has competed in numerous competitions and, earlier this year, competed in the Junior Commonwealth Championships in Namibia, where she won gold on the beam, silver on the floor and bronze as part of the team.

It brought on an early marriage with his then girlfriend Norah, so the couple could look after his three younger siblings. Sixty years on, with five children, the marriage is as strong as ever with the Hornby couple celebrating their anniversary on December 22. Mrs Craik said she thought nothing of the rushed marriage, saying she loved children and looked after her family and friends most of her life. The couple first met at a dance at the Dunedin Town Hall and dated for two years before they were married in 1956, in Dunedin. “We used to work pretty hard in those days, we had nothing when we got married. But anyway you are a millionaire when you have got your health,” Mr Craik said. Mr Craik started his career as an apprentice jockey in 1952 at the Wingatui Racecourse before he met his wife. He worked for New Zealand Post, and was a linesman before

New generation of hippy children A PROGRAMME based in Hornby that prepares children for when they start school has had its first graduation. The Home Interaction Programme for Parents and Youngsters (Hippy) provides tutors to help parents teach their pre-schoolers learning concepts, including mathematics and reading. Children were presented with certificates after completing a two-year course to prepare them for primary school. Parents spend an hour each

week at the programme working out with the tutors what to teach before spending 15 minutes a day working with their children. About 70 people attended the graduation with 13 children celebrating the completion of the programme. Hippy Hornby co-ordinator Kim Strange said it was a full family celebration with parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles and teachers attending the event. The hands-on programme is supported by the Ministry of Education.

Halswell take lead in cricket HALSWELL WILL take a 45-run lead into day two of their match against Southern Districts on Saturday. Day one of the match, which was played at Halswell Domain on Saturday, saw Southern put in to bat first after Halswell won the toss. Halswell started well with the ball and had Southern 32/3 after 17 overs before some good middle order partnerships saw Southern get to 135/6. However, bowler Geoff Barclay came back on to take late wickets, reducing Southern to 166/9 from their 50 overs. Barclay finished with figures of 5-39. Halswell were 30/2 after six overs before James Pearson joined opener Matt McClintock in the middle. These two batted well in a partnership worth 75 before Pearson was stumped for 39 off 30 balls and McClintock went out soon after for a patient 47. Leighton Johnston lifted the tempo with a nice 46 runs from 31 balls. However, a collapse saw Halswell go from 170/4 to 214 all out from just 36 overs, leaving Southern 10 minutes to bat until stumps. Johnston took a wicket on the last ball of the day to have Southern 3/1.

CBHS win national title By Gordon Findlater FRASER SHEAT has joined the likes of previous winner Black Caps captain Kane Williamson after taking out the MVP award at last week’s Secondary School Boys’ First XI Cup. The 18-year-old right arm pace bowler led all players with 11 wickets for Christchurch Boys’ High School at the weeklong tournament at Lincoln University, as his side captured the title with a perfect record of five wins from as many games. Sheat was understandably overjoyed to win the tournament MVP award. History tends to suggest those that win MVP are destined for bigger things. Williamson and fellow Black Cap Adam Milne are just two names to win the award over the last decade. “I didn’t expect the award at all. I can’t really see myself up there with those sort of guys. It’s pretty special to get the award and I’m just stoked for the boys that we could get the win,” said Sheat. The CBHS first XI not only went unbeaten at the tournament, but have remained unbeaten in all competitions

this year. “The boys have worked so hard throughout the year. They just keep working and working and this was their end goal. And to do it without losing one is an amazing effort from them,” said CBHS coach Mark Lane. The most memorable win during last week’s tournament came on Wednesday against Auckland’s St Kentigern College which finished runnersup. Batting first, CBHS scored 243 from 50 overs. St Kentigern got off to a great start in reply and were cruising at 184/4 in the 27th over. Three quick wickets fell before they stabilised to be 238/7, requiring just six runs from the final four overs. However, CBHS put in a spirited bowling effort to take the final three St Kentigern wickets for just three runs and win the match by two runs. CBHS have now won the cup three times over the past four years.

It might be the time of year, it might be something to do with drink driving, but whatever it is a car crash just now is pretty much guaranteed to result in a less than merry

Christmas. For goodness sake watch where you’re driving, watch other traffic and pedestrians and don’t speed. You’ve heard the term ‘fire and ice’. ‘Fire and ice cream’ doesn’t have the same ring about it does it? Every now and then comes an incident that is new, even to long-time firefighters. A recently opened service station in Harewood had a fire in an ice cream machine last Thursday. It didn’t come to much and was shut down by staff with firefighters just ensuring no fire spread with a thermal imaging camera. I’ve mentioned this

before but leaving the house with a clothes dryer just started is not recommended. We’ve all done it, many of us not even thinking about the possibilities. Mostly nothing will happen other than the clothes being dry when you come home. But occasionally, as in Malabar Cres, Broomfield, last Friday, a family will come home to a destroyed home. By being there while the appliance is operating, you increase your chance of cutting off a fire or at least having us on the way earlier. And every second saved means so much more of your stuff saved.

hristmas is a time for celebration, spending time with friends and family and enjoying festive foods and drinks. Nutrition-wise, this festive fare can be a challenge. Here are some simple tips to help you survive the festivities: • Don’t try to lose weight over the festive season. With parties, families and all the special foods that go with Christmas, it’s going to be just about impossible! Your main aim should be to maintain your weight (using some of the tips below!) • Eat regular meals. If you skip meals you are more likely to fill up on high fat snacks. It only takes a few of these snacks to add up to more calories than your usual meal. • Avoid going to a function hungry, you can easily eat a lot of party food in a short

If you are bored at a party you’re more likely to hover around the food table or seek out the serving platter. A good conversation can distract you from the food.
